Medical Dermatology

There are numerous causes of acne including hormonal changes, pore-clogging makeup, side effects of medications, an ineffective skincare plan, stress, family history, and more.
Acne can be cleared in most people by addressing the underlying excessive oil production, increased inflammation and over population of bacteria.
At Preston Dermatology, we use several treatments for acne. These include acne treatment plans, prescribing acne prescription treatments or other skincare products. In some cases, medical-grade laser treatments may be utilised to reduce or eliminate acne scarring.

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions, which affects children and adults. It can vary significantly in its presentation and cause. As such, multiple factors need to be addressed to successfully manage it. Eczema develops due to genetic and environmental factors that make it difficult for the skin to maintain a healthy barrier. When this happens, allergens and bacteria can enter and cause inflammation, leading to eczema.
Some of the symptoms of eczema include:
Dry, sensitive skin
Itching
Oozing and crusting
Red, scaly patches of skin
Rough, leathery skin

Perspiration is a natural way to regulate temperature, but excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) occurs when your body produces more sweat than needed to cool down. This condition usually affects areas with many sweat glands, like armpits, palms, soles of the feet, and face.
Hyperhidrosis can be managed with a tailored treatment that may include lotions, electrical devices, tablet therapy or injections.

At Preston Dermatology, we can diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions related to hair and nails. Our expert dermatologists are here to address your needs:
Alopecia refers to hair loss and can affect both men and women. It can be caused by a number of medical conditions, genetics and skin infections. Some types of alopecia can cause scarring. Examples include androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, lichen planopilaris, and others. We develop a treatment approach based on the type of alopecia you have.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis causes red, greasy marks or scaling on the scalp and face. It tends to come and go in adults. There are a variety of treatments available. Dandruff is a less severe form of this condition. When infants have this condition, we call it “cradle cap.” Most babies outgrow cradle cap within 6 to 12 months.
Folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles. It can appear anywhere on the body, but is most common on the scalp. It is generally not dangerous, but may need treatment in certain cases.
Head lice (pediculosis capitis) is an infestation of the scalp and it usually affects pre school and primary school aged children. Transmission occurs through direct contact and you need treatment to get rid of the bugs. Over the counter treatments are usually effective.
Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp that causes itchiness, hair loss (alopecia), and swollen glands in the neck. It is easily transmitted. You have to use antifungal medication to eliminate it.
Scalp psoriasis refers to psoriatic plaques on the scalp. These can appear as thick red plaques with an overlying scale. Medicated shampoos, topical solutions, injections, and systemic therapies can help.
Ingrown nails occur when the nail plate grows into, rather than over, the lateral nail fold. When you get an ingrown nail, your body reacts with redness, pain, swelling, and sometimes pus. Home remedies include soaking the area in warm water and gentle retraction of the nail fold. If you have severe discomfort or if the problem persists, you can see a dermatologist.
Nail fungus (onychomycosis) causes discoloured, thickened nails. Over the counter treatments may not be effective. Nail changes can indicate a larger problem. If you see changes in your nails, you can consult your dermatologist.

There are many skin infections that can affect individuals. These occur when there is a break, cut, or wound on your skin. It can also happen when your immune system is weakened, because of another disease or a medical treatment. Some skin infections cover a small area on the top of the skin, whereas others can go deep into the skin and spread to a larger area.
Bacteria can cause cellulitis, impetigo, and staphylococcal (staph) infections, viruses can cause shingles, warts and herpes simplex, fungi can cause athlete’s foot and yeast infections, while parasites can cause body lice, head lice and scabies. Treatments for skin conditions depend on the cause of the infection.
Preston Dermatology treats scabies, bed bugs, shingles, molluscum contagiosum, herpes simplex, fungal nail disease, warts and bacterial skin disease.

Phototherapy Servics.
-
UVB phototherapy uses ultraviolet B (UVB) light, which is a part of the natural light spectrum. It penetrates the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and helps slow the rapid growth of skin cells, which is the main issue in many skin conditions like psoriasis, vitiligo and eczema.
-
Patients stand in a phototherapy machine. Your initial treatment is nurse supervised. Doses are automatically increased and adjusted according to your treatment plan.
It can be used to treat areas anywhere on the face or body.
Most patients are prescribed 3 treatments per week for several weeks or months. Treatments cannot be given closer than 24 hours apart.
This treatment is not a cure but can effectively control or clear the disease to the extent that clearance may be maintained with cream medications at home or no active treatment at all. The remission length varies between patients; some need to return within a few months while others not for a year or more.

For best results, try to attend regularly or in accordance with your treatment plan. The dose will automatically decrease if you miss several appointments which makes the treatment less effective.
Most patients are prescribed 2-5 treatments per week for several weeks. Treatments cannot be given closer than 24 hours apart. The number of treatments per week may reduce as your condition improves.
Bookings are generally made one week in advance. Please inform our staff in advance if you cannot attend.

Iontophoresis (Excessive Sweating).
-
We offer iontophoresis therapy for the treatment of excessive sweating on the hands and feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis).
Iontophoresis is a simple, safe, and effective therapy to control hand and/or foot hyperhidrosis with an effectiveness rate of >90%. The treatment works by transferring a low voltage, low amperage current via a conductive medium (ie water) to the affected areas. This effectively neutralises the connection between the nerves and the sweat glands, thus reducing the excessive sweat gland activity. As a result, the amount of sweat reduces.
